FREEDM Center
Director: Dr. Alex Huang: Progress Energy Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State University.
Location: Headquartered at Keystone Science Center on NCSU's Centennial Campus. the Project will involve participants from 28 states and nine countries. The FREEDM Systems Center will encompass 20,000 square feet.
Mission: Improve power grid and develop renewable electric-energy technologies. The center will develop technology that transforms the nation’s century-old, centralized power grid into an alternative energy-friendly “smart grid” that can easily store and distribute energy produced from solar panels, wind fans, fuel cells and other energy sources.

BTEC
Keystone Science Center at NCSU's Centennial Campus will be home to a new process development pilot plant for the Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC). BTEC faculty and staff will develop new biomanufacturing technologies for the industry, execute grant projects, and provide expert resources for testing service agreements and development projects for researchers, emerging companies, and large established companies in need of short-term specialized lab space.
